Sobre/About…

Diletantes, diletantes!

Dilettantes, dilettantes! – is what those who persue a science or and art for love and the delight they take in it, per il loro diletto, are disdainfully called by those who pursue it only for gain, because they delight only in the money that is to be made by it. Their disdain is based upon their vile conviction that no one with devote himself seriously to anything if he is not driven to it by necessity, hunger, or greed. The general public has the same outlook and the same opinion: hence its wholehearted respect for the “professionals” and its distrust of dilettantes. But the truth is that to the dilettante the subject is an end in itself, while to the professional it is only the means to an end. But only the man who cares about something in itself, who loves it and does it con amore.

This Portal E.M Cioran 🇧🇷 started out timidly in 2010 with a biographical section, book extracts and a just a few texts by/about Emil Cioran in Portuguese.

I had discovered Cioran somewhere between 2002 and 2003, by A Short History of Decay, and I soon began to miss a wider dissemination of his works in Portuguese and also a (physical or virtual) space for debating and conversing about Cioran, philosophy, literature, music, and other related themes, Romanian and universal.

Due to the scarcity of the production (scholarly, journalistic, dilettante) around Cioran in Portuguese, it gradually became multilingual (a “Cioranian Babel”), including other languages that I master sufficiently to have at least an instrumental reading (Spanish, English, French, Italian, Romanian, a bit of German).

Cioran, born in Romania and an expat in France, from Sao Paulo (Brasil) to the world: urbi et orbi.

It has also had it scope widened, in such a way to include a wide array of Cioran-related themes and authors: philosophy, literature, poetry, cinema, music, Romania’s culture and history, among others.

A blog about Cioran that I would want to exist had I not taken the initiative to create it. It is an instrument of research and a platform that gathers, catalogs and organizes all kinds of material concerning the Romanian-born author, besides other related authors and themes.

A tribute not only to the author of A Short History of Decay, but to his homeland as well, Romania. And also to the constellation of authors, present and past, who orbit around him.

And if it comes in handy to others — readers, researchers, sightseers — as well, all the better. As said a philosopher, the light one turns on to oneself might as well illuminate others.  Or, in this case, the light that is switched off, so one can walk and see better in the dark…

Cioran: 6 letters that symbolize a lifetime obsession, a passion that never goes out, an ever-lasting bone. Also an “object” of philosophical inquiry, halfway between Academia and the open world.

Thanks to Cioran, I am not not completely vacant, I have found myself a “sector” in existence, something to dedicate myself to — per il mio diletto — in this tedious world in which nothing, or very little, is truely interest-worthy.
